Ishockey-VM 1997 pulje B ble avholdt i Katowice og Sosnowiec i Polen i perioden 12. - 21. april 1997. I forbindelse med utvidelsen av A-puljen fra 12 til 16 lag fra 1998 var opp- og nedrykksprosedyren i B-VM for 1997 endret vesentlig. Belarus, som vant B-puljen, rykket opp til A-puljen sammen med Sveits, som til tross for at de endte på en 3.-plass var automatisk kvalifisert til A-puljen som vertsnasjon. Lagene som endte nr. 2, 4 og 5 i årets B-VM skulle spille en kvalifiseringsturnering sammen med laget endte på sisteplass i A-puljen om spill i A-puljen. Ingen lag rykket ned til pulje C.
